Liverpool latest: Virgil van Dijk transfer claim as World Cup star 'chooses' rivals
Liverpool's transfer business has largely stalled since the arrival of Victor Munoz last month. Andoni Iraola's side acted swiftly to snap up the Spanish winger from Osasuna for £34.5million. Defender Jeremy Jacquet has also formally completed his move to the Reds , having put pen to paper in January on a switch from Rennes valued at approximately £60m, but activity has dried up in recent weeks. Since the transfer window opened, speculation has focused on potential targets including Yan Diomande and Bradley Barcola. Diomande has handed Liverpool their first setback after apparently opting to join Paris Saint-Germain instead. FOLLOW OUR LIVERPOOL FC FACEBOOK PAGE! All the latest news and analysis from Anfield on the Liverpool Echo's dedicated LFC Facebook page Today's developments see another prospective target reportedly choosing Liverpool's Premier League rivals, Arsenal, over Anfield . Meanwhile, a startling revelation concerning Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has emerged. Liverpool are prepared to sell Virgil van Dijk during the summer transfer window, according to reports from TEAMtalk. The Reds captain has established himself as one of the finest defenders in contemporary football since completing a £75m switch from Southampton in January 2018. The Dutchman's Liverpool contract expires in the summer of 2027 and there has been mounting speculation that Turkish clubs, including Galatasaray, are keen on securing his services. The outlet claims that, while Liverpool are not proactively seeking to offload the centre-back, they remain 'open to offers' for the player, who turns 35 this month. It reports that Van Dijk and Liverpool 'are prepared to evaluate any serious offer on its merits before making a decision' and suggests the club no longer view their captain as 'untouchable. ' However, incoming Reds boss Iraola is not actively pursuing the defender's departure. TEAMtalk has also claimed that former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has identified Van Dijk as a priority target for his new side, Milan. The Dutch international has proved a transformational acquisition at Anfield. He has guided Liverpool to two Premier League crowns, the Champions League in 2019, and numerous other domestic honours. Van Dijk has also featured in two additional European Cup finals with the Reds, suffering defeat to Real Madrid on both occasions. Liverpool's prospects of securing Bradley Barcola may have taken a hit, with the player reportedly leaning towards a switch to Arsenal. The Daily Mail's Lewis Steele suggests the Reds are simply not regarded as attractive a destination this year as they were 12 months ago when they had just lifted the Premier League trophy. Speaking on the Anfield Index podcast, Steele said: "I do think he probably will end up leaving PSG. He's got a decision to make and he might prefer Arsenal. He's probably looking at [Mikel] Arteta, and he might want to live in the capital city of London." The journalist went on to say that Liverpool have laid the groundwork on Barcola, but, as with Diomande, that may still prove insufficient to secure the winger's signature. PSG are said to be keen on retaining Barcola, with a reported asking price of around £116m. Steele further noted that the European champions could command an even greater fee should France go on to lift the World Cup trophy, a scenario that currently appears increasingly plausible. He added: "It's going to be very, very hard for Liverpool to get Barcola," conceding that the Reds have so far missed out on their primary targets. Bradley Barcola drops transfer update as Liverpool alert to double deal
Liverpool are continuing to be linked with a move for Paris Saint-Germain star Bradley Barcola, just days after being handed a major blow regarding the future of Yan Diomande. The Reds are expected to have a busy summer transfer window ahead, but have so far added just one new signing to their squad. Victor Munoz was signed by Liverpool from Osasuna last month in a deal worth around £34.5million, but there are still rumours about what the club may do next. Diomande was a player heavily mentioned as a player of interest to Liverpool, with the Reds believed to have expressed a willingness to pay £86million to sign the RB Leipzig star. However, reports emerged claiming that Diomande would prefer a move to PSG, leaving Liverpool to assess other potential targets this summer. Barcola is one player who has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool, and now the 23-year-old has provided an update on his future. The winger, who is currently with the France squad for this summer’s World Cup, is reported by RMC Sport journalist Fabrice Hawkins to have said: “I am focused on the World Cup, what will happen after that, I don't know.” It remains to be seen what the future holds for Barcola, with fresh updates continuing to emerge about where the France international will be playing his football next season. FOLLOW OUR LIVERPOOL FC FACEBOOK PAGE! All the latest news and analysis from Anfield on the Liverpool Echo's dedicated LFC Facebook page The Athletic have reported that even though Barcola may be a player of interest to Liverpool, PSG are not looking to sell the forward. The report also claims that the Champions League winners would value Barcola at a fee in excess of the £116million that Manchester City are paying to sign Elliot Anderson, if an exit were to be sanctioned. Arsenal have also previously been credited with an interest in signing Barcola as they look to strengthen their wide forward options. The Gunners have also been linked with signing Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers, but the Reds may still have to be mindful of a potential battle to sign Barcola this summer, if their interest proves to be genuine. Not to mention, also looking to react to the rumours that Diomande may prefer a move Paris rather than to Anfield .

England World Cup star's agents fly out of UK to 'hold transfer talks with two clubs'
Trevoh Chalobah’s agents have landed in Italy to hold talks over the 26-year-old’s future. Chalobah, who is currently across the Atlantic at the World Cup with England, is reportedly keen on a move to Serie A this summer. The centre-back, who played 34 times for Chelsea in the Premier League last season, is the subject of interest from both Inter Milan and Cesc Fabregas’ Como in the Italian top-flight. Fabrizio Romano has reported that Chalobah’s agents will hold talks with both clubs, following rumours that Chelsea have already rejected an opening offer from Como of around £23m. Talks with Inter Milan are ongoing over personal terms, but Cristian Chivu’s side have not yet tabled a formal offer to the west London club. Romano claims that Chalobah is a long-standing target of Inter Milan director Piero Ausilio, and the defender is keen to play in Serie A in 2026-27. Chalobah is no stranger to a move away from west London, though he has only ever left the club on loan. The 26-year-old joined Chelsea’s academy at the age of eight, and signed his first professional contract with the club in March 2018. The versatile defender was named by Antonio Conte as a substitute for the 2018 FA Cup final victory against Manchester United , but Chalobah did not enter the field. Three successive loan spells followed for the Englishman, as Chalobah signed for Ipswich Town in 2018, Huddersfield Town in 2019 and Lorient in 2020; his first taste of domestic football on the continent. Chalobah returned to Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea the following summer and made his debut in the 2021 UEFA Super Cup against Villareal, months after his boyhood club had won the Champions League . Tuchel has shown faith in the Englishman, not only handing him his Chelsea debut but also selecting him for his first England cap in May last year. Following Newcastle full-back Tino Livramento’s injury ahead of the World Cup campaign, Tuchel shocked many by selecting Chalobah as his replacement. The 26-year-old is yet to feature in this summer’s tournament, but with England’s options at right-back dwindling, he may very well yet play his part in the Three Lions’ bid to bring football home this summer. While Inter previously inquired over the availability of Udinese’s Oumar Solet, a deal did not progress further than opening talks. As such, Chalobah is now believed to be Inter’s number one target as the Nerazzurri look to strengthen their defence as they bid to defend their Serie A title next season. Xabi Alonso’s side are said to value Chalobah at around £30m, with Como’s opening bid failing to reach this valuation.

Man Utd confirm Andre Onana exit as Michael Carrick's transfer plan takes shape
Manchester United have confirmed that Andre Onana has rejoined Trabzonspor on loan in a boost to Michael Carrick's transfer plans. Onana, 30, spent last season in Turkey, having fallen out of favour at Old Trafford . The goalkeeper racked up 40 appearances to help Trabzonspor win the Turkish Cup and finish third in the Super Lig. Onana will now spend the 2026-27 season at Papara Park, with United announcing that the move had been agreed on Friday. Trabzonspor will pay the Red Devils a loan fee worth £1.3million and cover Onana's wages - which have increased due to United's involvement in the Champions League - in full. The deal doesn't, however, include an option to buy. Onana's departure frees up room for United to bring in a new goalkeeper, as Carrick was faced with having to integrate the ex-Ajax star back into the squad should he have stayed, while his wages would've taken room in the budget. The Red Devils have reportedly shortlisted Leeds goalkeeper Karl Darlow and Wolves ' Sam Johnstone as options. Get the latest World Cup 2026 news in your inbox with our Make Football Great Again newsletter United want to sign an experienced No.2 to support Senne Lammens, who had a brilliant first season after joining from Royal Antwerp last summer. Altay Bayindir served as his understudy in the 2025-26 campaign but United also plan to offload him. The Turkey international is said agreed personal terms with Besiktas , who were linked with a move in January. Bayindir, 28, has only made 17 appearances in three seasons at Old Traffford and should he complete the move to Istanbul, he'll hope to enjoy the same uptick in his career as Onana enjoyed. "I'm very happy, trust me. I'm living the best period of my life," the Cameroonian told Turkish outlet Yeniasir in December. "I can't complain, I'm very happy to be here. Sometimes I'm driving and a car cuts in front of me. 'Onana, stop, I want a photo'. Which goalkeeper should Manchester United sign? Have your say in the comments section . "I think to myself, 'Yes, but we can do this in another way'. But when they see me, they're happy, and so am I. It was difficult at first, but now I understand. "They are my men, I love them, and I love this feeling because they are very passionate. It's a wonderful thing. It's something you can't describe if you're not here. "But the time I've spent here has been perfect for me. I'm happy to be here. It's a different lifestyle, but it's great. Truly incredible, amazing." Spurs sign Fernandes for club record £85m
Tottenham have completed the signing of midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for a club-record fee of £85m. Spurs have not confirmed the length of contract for the 21-year-old, who has played once for Portugal but is not part of their World Cup squad. Fernandes has spent the past two seasons in the Premier League with Southampton and West Ham, although each club were relegated to the Championship. “I’ve admired Mateus for a long time because he combines quality on the ball with the intensity and intelligence that are so important in the way we want to play,” said Spurs head coach Roberto de Zerbi. “Despite his age, he already has good experience in the Premier League and has shown quality and consistency at this level. “Mateus is comfortable under pressure, can progress the ball, works hard for the team and has the courage to make things happen in difficult moments. “I believe this is the ideal environment for him to continue his development.” Tottenham saw off competition from Manchester United, who were unwilling to match the fee agreed by Spurs – which is a guaranteed £85m without add-ons. Fernandes was viewed as a primary target for the north London club after they had a bid for Sandro Tonali rejected by Newcastle. However, Spurs have now agreed a £100m fee for the Italy midfielder. They have made a fast start to the summer transfer window, with Fernandes their fifth signing already. His arrival follows that of goalkeeper Martin Dubravka plus defenders Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Jan Paul van Hecke. “I’m very excited for this next step,” Fernandes said. “Spurs is a massive club and the head coach was a key part of why I have decided to join. “When we spoke, it was very special. We look at football in the same way – going onto the pitch as a strong team, with fight and energy, to try to win every game.” DISCLAIMER: The Views, Comments, Opinions, Contributions and Statements made by Readers and Contributors on this platform do not necessarily represent the views or policy of Multimedia Group Limited. Germany head coach quits after World Cup exit as former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp looms
Julian Nagelsmann has resigned as Germany coach in the wake of a round-of-32 exit at the World Cup, with former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp touted as a possible replacement. The German Football Federation (DFB) confirmed the move on Friday, adding it was seeking talks with Klopp, who it said had expressed interest in the position. “Stakeholder representatives and the supervisory board of DFB ... on Friday unanimously decided, on the proposal of DFB president Bernd Neuendorf, to immediately terminate the contractual relationship with Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann,” a statement said. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today Arrow “Nagelsmann had already asked in a confidential conversation with the association’s leadership the previous day to be released from his duties. “The stakeholder representatives and supervisory board have now granted that request.” Nagelsmann’s fate was sealed after the team lost 4-3 on penalties against outsiders Paraguay in the first knockout game on Monday, with most of the criticism directed at Nagelsmann. Four-time champions Germany had also lost their last group match against Ecuador, after winning their first two games at the tournament against Curacao and Ivory Coast. Former Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich coach Nagelsmann, 38, landed the national team job in September 2023, succeeding Hansi Flick. Nagelsmann oversaw 37 matches, of which Germany won 23, with seven draws and seven defeats. He led the team to the quarter-finals of the home Euros in 2024 and into the Nations League finals last year. Former Borussia Dortmund coach Klopp is now the official frontrunner to take over. The 59-year-old is currently head of Red Bull’s global football operations. “With regard to filling the coaching post, the DFB leadership will now seek talks with Jurgen Klopp,” the DFB statement said. “He has already signalled his fundamental willingness to take on the position.” Germany’s next match is their Nations League start on September 24 against the Netherlands. Greece and Serbia are the other opponents in the group stage, which runs until November.

Jurgen Klopp to come face-to-face with Florian Wirtz after comments on Liverpool star
Jurgen Klopp has never been shy in giving his opinion on Florian Wirtz , and now the pair are on course to work together. While announcing Julian Nagelsmann's departure on Friday, the German football association (DFB) confirmed that they'll hold talks with the interested Klopp over becoming their next manager. It follows Germany's shock exit at the World Cup on Monday, as they were beaten on penalties in the round of 32 by Paraguay . Nagelsmann, 38, has stepped down from his position , having been in charge September 2023. His departure has paved the way for Klopp to take over, with a clause in the former Liverpool boss' contact as Red Bull's Global Head of Soccer that allows him to accept the Germany job. One of the players he'd no-doubt be working with his Wirtz, who had an underwhelming first season at Liverpool following his £115million move from Bayer Leverkusen , a British record at the time. The playmaker registered just seven goals and eight assists in 49 appearances under Arne Slot , who was sacked in May and replaced by Andoni Iraola . Wirtz was supposed to help Liverpool retain the Premier League title, with Klopp believing that the 23-year-old would make Slot's team even better. Get the latest World Cup 2026 news in your inbox with our Make Football Great Again newsletter During an interview with German broadcaster RTL , Klopp said of Wirtz's arrival: "It will be really, really great. I'm sure of it.... It's very difficult to strengthen them when you're champions. But Liverpool have managed that. They've signed an exceptional talent in Florian Wirtz." Then in October, once it became clear that Wirtz was struggling to adapt to life in the Premier League, Klopp vowed on the The Diary of a CEO podcast : "You all will eat your words if you use the wrong words with Florian Wirtz. He's an incredible talent and player." Klopp told RTL in the same month: "I don't have to worry about Florian Wirtz because his quality is so outstanding. Of course, everything is fine, and everyone knows that. The discussion is certainly being blown out of proportion." Will Florian Wirtz come good at Liverpool? Have your say in the comments section . He added: "He's a once-in-a-century talent, and at some point he'll show that in every game again, as he did at Leverkusen. (He has) a stable environment at Liverpool, and the club is great in moments like these. If anyone's worried - you don't have to! You can stop." Klopp most recently commented on Wirtz while working as a pundit at the World Cup for another German broadcaster, Magenta. He gave a hint about how he'd use the Liverpool star in order to get the best out of him. "The important thing is that we involve him in the game. There were moments against Curacao when I thought, 'just give him the ball'," Klopp explained when analysing Germany's 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast . "If you really want Flo Wirtz to get into a rhythm, if you want the place to really be buzzing, then give him the ball, because that's when he feels completely at home. It's important to involve him because that's when Flo can feel confident and comfortable on the pitch. "He shouldn't drop back and get the ball from his own penalty area and we expect him to start making plays, we have to find moments where we can use this position, because with his positioning he creates a lot of space for the players next to him, for the full-backs and for everyone who can make runs into those space." How Tottenham's £237m spending spree could pave the way for the return of Harry Kane
Tottenham might well have paid over the odds for Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali but their early summer outlay shows they mean real transfer business and are starting to look like a serious football club again

Two Unai Emery favourites linked with Aston Villa exits amid shock transfer claims
Two of Aston Villa’s stalwarts have been linked with a move away from Villa Park. The Telegraph are reporting Arsenal have ‘tentative interest’ in Ezri Konsa, while The Sun reckon Ollie Watkins is a target for Fenerbahce. Both players are key men under Unai Emery, indeed no-one has played more for Villa under Emery than Watkins and Konsa, both are top five most picked players in his entire career. Watkins has been at Villa since September 2020, while Konsa also arrived from Brentford in July 2019. FOLLOW OUR FACEBOOK PAGE! Get more news and AVFC analysis via our Aston Villa FB page But the former Bees team-mates now find themselves the subject of speculation regarding their futures. The Telegraph say that with two-years left on his contract Konsa could be valued at around £60million – more than the Gunners would want to pay. The Premier League champions are more interested in Morgan Rogers – but the £130m valuation is way over what they are willing to stump up, Mikel Arteta is said to be behind the tentative interest in Konsa. Meanwhile The Sun cite journalist Ekrem Konur as saying the Turkish outfit want to speak to Watkins after the World Cup.
