(Photo: AFP) Football, Sports July 7, 2026 ‘The best night of my England career’ Bellingham thrilled after heroics power England to win over Mexico MEXICO CITY, Mexico —Jude Bellingham savoured the “best night” of his international career after scoring twice to fire England into the World Cup quarter-finals with a 3-2 win away at Mexico. The Real Madrid midfielder bagged a 95-second brace in the first half to spoil the hopes of a passionate, 80,000 home crowd as Mexico lost for just the third time in 90 matches at Estadio Azteca. On a night of high drama in the Mexican capital, England had to survive for most of the second half a man down, following Jarell Quansah’s red card. But after Harry Kane’s penalty added to their lead they held out to set up a meeting with Erling Haaland’s Norway in the last eight on Saturday. “It’s the best night of my England career. Just unbelievable. I can’t put it into words right now,” said Bellingham. “It’s tough to kind of gather everything together — the goals, the penalty against, the penalty for, the red card. It was a chaotic game but credit to Mexico, they were a different class…but this team showed character tonight and I’m proud.” England also overcame playing at high altitude and a one-hour delay to the game due to adverse weather on a night that will live long in the memory. Bellingham hailed the character shown by Thomas Tuchel’s side in contrast to the disappointments he grew up watching at major tournaments. “Big pressure moments in years gone by watching as a fan, as a kid, England probably would have crumbled but we stuck together until the last second,” he added. “The players who came on, the players that started, running themselves into the ground and giving everything — that is what this team is about.” Bellingham now has four goals in five games at the tournament to emphatically silence pre-competition doubts that he would even be certain to start under Tuchel. He is dreaming of uniting a nation as England aim to to end 60 years of hurt since they last won a major tournament. “No matter where you’re from, no matter what you do, I can imagine everyone’s together, and that’s the thing I dream of being a part of — bringing my country together and and giving them nights like this,” said the 23-year-old. I’m so proud of this team. What we’ve done tonight is spectacular. {"xml":"xml"}{"jamaica-observer":"Jamaica Observer"} 0 Comments · Make a comment ALSO ON JAMAICA OBSERVER International News, Latest News FIFA chief condemns Paraguayan politician’s racist abuse of Mbappe July 6, 2026 LOS ANGELES, United States (AFP)—FIFA president Gianni Infantino said on Monday he "unequivocally condemns" the racist abuse directed at France forwar... {"jamaica-observer":"Jamaica Observer"} Latest News, Sports Jamaica eliminated from FIBA World Championships qualifiers July 6, 2026 KINGSTON, Jamaica—Jamaica was eliminated from the FIBA World Championships qualifiers Monday, after they were beaten 116-78 by Canada at the TD Colise... {"jamaica-observer":"Jamaica Observer"} International News, Latest News Belgium beat co-hosts USA 4-1 to advance to World Cup quarter-finals July 6, 2026 SEATTLE, United States (AFP)—Belgium dumped the United States out of their own World Cup Monday, as Charles De Ketelaere's brace secured a 4-1 win tha... {"jamaica-observer":"Jamaica Observer"} Latest News, Sports JDA pushes draught, problem-solving in St Mary school July 6, 2026 KINGSTON, Jamaica —The Jamaica Draughts Association (JDA) continues to advance its mission of promoting strategic and critical thinking among Jamaica'... {"jamaica-observer":"Jamaica Observer"} Latest News, News Forex: $158.25 to one US dollar July 6, 2026 KINGSTON, Jamaica — The United States (US) dollar on Monday, July 6, ended at $158.25 down by $1.12 cents, according to the Bank of Jamaica’s daily ex... {"jamaica-observer":"Jamaica Observer"} Latest News, Regional Holness writes Caricom expressing concerns over reappointment of secretary general July 6, 2026 CASTRIES, St Lucia (CMC)–Prime Minister Andrew Holness says while Jamaica is not seeking to overturn the decision of regional leaders to reappoint Dr ... {"jamaica-observer":"Jamaica Observer"} International News, Latest News FIFA defend Balogun referee after Trump attack July 6, 2026 LOS ANGELES, United States (AFP)—FIFA defended the World Cup referee at the centre of the Folarin Balogun controversy on Monday after the official was... {"jamaica-observer":"Jamaica Observer"} Latest News, Sports Jamaica to face strong Canadian team in FIBA World Champs qualifying game July 6, 2026 KINGSTON, Jamaica—Jamaica must beat second round qualifiers Canada in Monday’s FIBA World Championships Americas Group B game in Canada, if they are t... {"jamaica-observer":"Jamaica Observer"} HOUSE RULES We welcome reader comments on the top stories of the day. Harry Kane loses his voice, but England rediscover their roar against Mexico
In the end, Harry Kane might have lost his voice, but England stood there unconquered, adding a delightfully fresh vibe to their soundscape. The cauldron of the Azteca and thunder in the skies — which led to a one-hour delay to the kick-off — made it look like a mythical spectacle. As if more than a football match, it was a realm between living in a painful past and awakening the inner giant.England — having to adjust to the high altitude of the venue, a Mexico side unbeaten in 10 World Cup matches and playing over 45 minutes a man down after Jarell Quansah’s red card — delivered a statement bold and boisterous. A 3-2 win, embellished with a Jude Bellingham brace and a Harry Kane penalty, which took him to six goals in the competition, set out to tell a different story this time around, adequately presented with a passion and with a telling sense of transformation. That this England under Thomas Tuchel are a different beast, with Kane leading by example is resplendent with a new identity. That this England know how to handle the pressure, bury the Ghost of Maradona for good and write their own destiny.“I am just proud of the mentality and attitude, (these are) the moments in the tournament when you find a way to win. We did it with pure mentality and heart,” Tuchel said after setting up a quarterfinal with Norway. It’s a point of view we haven’t much seen across the surfeit of England performances in the past. It’s now coming out in the open with a remarkably and refreshingly new look.If Kane staged the team’s come-from-behind win against DR Congo last week, it was Bellingham who provided the sparks against Mexico, scoring two and shaping the game right till the end.“This is probably one of the biggest England wins in a while, probably the biggest one I can remember as a fan or player,” Bellingham later remarked, “The best night of my England career.”Tuchel had dropped Bellingham from the squad eight months ago. But the Real Madrid star has now returned like a man on a mission.Fate, virtue, sacrifice and self-belief came together in England’s game, highlighting new-found ability to transform their past stumbles in similar situations into a searching existential need. And if such a shift in mentality may look a foreign concept, its genesis could well be found outside England. Tuchel being a German in the dugout is the focal point of this ‘foreign’ makeover. Add to this Kane’s bravery in leaving the Premier League and scaling new heights in the Bundesliga as a Bayern Munich player as well as Bellingham’s art of learning the tricks as a streetfighter on the hallowed grass of the Santiago Bernabeu in Spain.Take, for example, the team’s reaction after the red card to Quansah. In England’s World Cup history, a sendingoff is usually viewed as a harbinger of doom. How their fight in the Round of 16 against Argentina went in vain in 1998 after David Beckham’s red-card is well documented. Wayne Rooney’s expulsion in the 2006 quarterfinal against Portugal followed a similar script as England bit the dust in another penalty shootout.Quansah’s exit must have brought back a few twin echoes, with its usual moments of doubt, when Mexico launched a relentless attack over the final half hour, including 11 minutes of stoppage time. This was where England fought, truly grew as a team and found their voice. Tuchel switched to a defensive 5-3-1 and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford came up with a series of interceptions, further illuminating expansion of the team’s vivid and distinctive ‘foreign’ fighting mentality. This is the kind of match which generates belief and gives the team a sense of calm in the chaos, that one is ready for the rough ride against the odds.Is it coming home? This England, perhaps entering a new and more liberated stage of life, have belief to go the distance.Get the latest Sports News and Live updates. Download the TOI app.

Micah Richards mocks Alan Shearer for wanting England star benched at World Cup
Micah Richards showered Jude Bellingham with praise after a famous win over Mexico (Picture: The Rest Is Football) Micah Richards has ridiculed Alan Shearer for suggesting Jude Bellingham should be left out of England’s starting XI prior to the World Cup. Debate raged over England’s ideal No.10 in the build-up to this summer’s tournament, with Morgan Rogers, Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Bellingham all seemingly vying for the shirt. But Foden and Palmer were left out of Thomas Tuchel’s squad altogether and Bellingham has without question nailed down his place as one of the first names on the team sheet with a series of magnificent displays, including three man-of-the-match showings. In an all-time classic last-16 clash at the iconic Azteca, the 23-year-old Real Madrid superstar struck twice in the space to two minutes to put the Three Lions firmly in the ascendancy against Mexico, this year’s co-hosts. And while England were forced to dig deep following Jarell Quansah’s sending off, Tuchel’s men produced one of the great away performances to emerge from Mexico City with a famous 3-2 victory, with Harry Kane’s second-half penalty proving decisive. Kane and Co will resume their campaign on Saturday at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium versus Norway, who saw off Brazil to book their spot in the quarter-finals for a first time in the country’s history. ‘Now we’re cooking!’ ex-England defender Richards said of the unforgettable display on The Rest Is Football. Bellingham has scored four goals at this summer’s tournament (Picture: Getty) Shearer suggested Bellingham should start to the World Cup on the bench (Picture: Getty) ‘Honestly, England were outstanding. In that first half, all the things we talked about on the podcast from the start, in terms of being dynamic, in terms of having that cohesion, in terms of being aggressive and really believing in themselves. ‘I thought they showed everything from start to finish. ‘Obviously in the second half it was more about that togetherness, commitment and tactical nous from Thomas Tuchel, who we’ve mentioned many times in terms of in-game substitutions.’ To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Up Next Previous Page Next Page The Madrid star has now scored more World Cup goals than Michael Owen and Sir Bobby Charlton (Picture: Getty) Richards believes Quansah was ‘a little bit unfortunate’ to be given his marching orders for a foul on Jesus Gallardo, but was ‘absolutely delighted’ with how the rest of the team responded to the setback to advance through. ‘I just thought everything in the game was perfect, although, obviously, Jarell Quansah got sent off,’ he continued. ‘I thought he was a little bit unfortunate, he got the ball but then it was the follow-through so I understand why he had to get a red card. Tuchel’s side do battle with Norway for a spot in the semi-finals (Picture: Getty) ‘All in all, I’m just absolutely delighted for them because it feels as if we’ve been waiting for that moment and we knew they had it in them. ‘We’ve seen them play well under Gareth Southgate at times and get to finals, but that was a Tuchel-like performance which we expected to see maybe a bit earlier, but it came at the right time.’ Richards then turned this attentions’ to Bellingham’s heroics, taking the opportunity to poke fun at Shearer for his comments in the lead-up to this year’s World Cup. Speaking to Daily Mail Sport just last month, the ex-England and Newcastle striker stated: Jude Bellingham doesn’t start the first game for me. ‘I think Thomas will go with what has done well for him in England games: Elliot Anderson and Declan Rice, and then Morgan Rogers ahead of them. I would expect him to go with those three. That’s what I would do.’ To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Up Next Previous Page Next Page In response to Shearer’s remarks, Richards said: ‘Alan didn’t want to start Jude in the tournament! Now look at him! Who else? Who else?!’ ‘He’s constantly in the WhatsApp group talking about, “Well I called this team, I called that team!”, but he wasn’t starting Jude! ‘I look at him now… eh? Who else?!’ Can England realistically win this year's World Cup? The former Manchester City and Aston Villa defender said of Gordon: ‘He was brilliant and I feel as though he needed that performance because there’s been a lot of talk about him and Marcus Rashford, who should start and who should come on. ‘That pressure of joining Barcelona comes with all this expectation and it sometimes can be difficult to deal with that when you’re playing for a team and not getting as many headlines. ‘All the headlines coming into the tournament was about who is going to start – Rashford or Gordon? – and up until this moment he’s not really produced his best stuff. ‘But tonight he was brilliant! The way he wanted to take people on, they way he wanted to press, the way he got the penalty… everything about his game was dynamic.’ For more stories like this, check our sport page. World Cup : 10 - man England overcome Mexico in five - goal thriller

USA's Pulisic, England's Bellingham In the World Cup Spotlight For Match Day 21
The knockout round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup rolls on, and Wednesday will see three more teams advance and three more teams exit the tournament after the round of 32. In the opening game, contending England will hope to end the Cinderella run of the DR Congo when the teams face off in Atlanta. The second game takes us to Vancouver, Canada, where Belgium and Senegal are both coming off five-goal blowout wins in their respective group stage finales. Finally, co-hosts the United States will return to action at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium and look for just its second-ever knockout win when it hosts a Bosnia and Herzegovina team that will be a challenge with its youthful roster. Here is everything you need to know for Wednesday at the World Cup. When: Wednesday, July 1, 12 p.m. ET Where: Atlanta TV: FOX Stream: Watch three days free on FOX One Contenders England take on one of the tournament’s fairytale stories in the DR Congo. England entered the World Cup as one of the teams with a realistic chance of winning the title. Thus far, it's been decent but hasn’t played like a superpower along the lines of France, Spain or Argentina. The Three Lions were at their best in the second half of their opening 4-2 win over Croatia. After that, it was pedestrian efforts in a 0-0 draw with Ghana followed by a 2-0 win over Panama where the English needed 62 minutes before getting on the board. England has plenty of firepower offensively with one of the game’s best center forwards in Harry Kane, a deep selection of wing options that includes Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka and Jude Bellingham in the middle. The biggest concern for England’s starting lineup is at right back, as both Reece James and Jarell Quansah are sidelined due to injuries. That leaves Djed Spence likely to slide over the right side in the starting XI. The question for head coach Thomas Tuchel is whether he can get his team playing with intensity from the opening whistle. That was not the case in the last two games, when England was also heavily favored. DR Congo is enjoying a lot of support from neutral fans in the United States as the country participates in its first World Cup since 1974. The Leopards secured a surprising knockout berth as one of the best third-placed teams after holding Portugal to a draw and staging a thrilling 3-1 comeback victory over Uzbekistan. The team’s only defeat came in a 1-0 loss to Colombia. Sébastien Desabre’s squad will be highly motivated for this game, as the team boasts significant Premier League experience. This includes Newcastle United attacker Yoane Wissa, who has been the team’s star thus far at the World Cup with three goals in the group stage. DR Congo is expected to bring a highly physical but disciplined approach to this game. The team will sit deep in a compact formation, most likely the 5-3-2 it used against Portugal, and look to break out quickly on counterattacks. England is the heavy favorite, but games like this can be tricky as England is under enormous pressure to advance, while the DR Congo likely sees this game as a massive opportunity with nothing to lose. Player To Watch Jude BellinghamMidfielder · England The Real Madrid playmaker was the Man of the Match in the 2-0 win over Panama on Saturday while playing in a deeper role. With Declan Rice expected to return to the starting XI, Bellingham's role will shift to focus on breaking down DR Congo’s low block. He will be looking to find pockets of space to open the game up for Kane, or the winger on either side. With Kane likely to be heavily guarded, Bellingham will also serve as a secondary scoring threat for England. When: Wednesday, July 1, 4 p.m. ET Where: Seattle TV: FS1 Stream: Watch three days free on FOX One Wednesday’s second game takes us to Vancouver Stadium in Canada, with Belgium and Senegal in what will be the first-ever competitive meeting between the two teams. Belgium and Senegal enter this game with similar group stage patterns. Both were underwhelming in the two opening games but then secured a spot in the knockouts with a blowout win in the finale against the weakest team in the group. For Senegal, it was never going to be an easy path after getting drawn into a group with France and Norway. As expected, Senegal lost to France, 3-1, and then to Norway, 3-2, when, like most teams, it was unable to stop two of the best players in the world in Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland. But with eight third-place teams advancing to the knockouts, the door for Senegal was still open if it could beat Iraq, which it did, 5-0. For Belgium, the group stage was more disappointing because the Red Devils were never an underdog. Following a lackluster beginning of the tournament in a 1-1 draw with Egypt followed by a 0-0 draw with Iran, Rudi Garcia’s team finally was able to play up to its potential in a 5-1 blowout win over New Zealand, the lowest-ranked team at the World Cup in the FIFA World Rankings. The Red Devils lineup should have few surprises. Kevin De Bruyne remains the creative heartbeat in midfield, and he is flanked by top wingers in Manchester City’s Jérémy Doku and Arsenal’s Leandro Trossard. The biggest question for Garcia is at center forward, as Charles De Ketelaere started two of the group stage games and Romelu Lukaku has started once. Neither player was particularly convincing. For Senegal, head coach Pape Thiaw relies heavily on his team’s athleticism in the attack. Crystal Palace’s Ismaïla Sarr scored three goals in the group stage, Everton winger Iliman Ndiaye made a big impact against Iraq, and veteran captain Sadio Mané remains the heart of the team despite not scoring in the group stage. The big concern for Senegal is that star goalkeeper Edouard Mendy will miss the game due to a knee injury. Le Havre goalkeeper Mory Diaw is expected to start in his place. Belgium is the favorite in this game based on its talent, experience and recent form (the Red Devils have not lost in 16 games). But Senegal is capable of pulling off an upset and, as we have seen, this tournament has not been kind to favored European teams. Player To Watch Pape GueyeMidfielder · Senegal The Villarreal midfielder was excellent in the 5-0 win over Iraq. After subbing into the game in the 56th minute, Gueye had two goals and an assist to complete the rout, which was needed in the goal differential tiebreaker. That effort off the bench will likely see Gueye return to the team’s starting lineup, but only now should he be extremely confident of his form. When: Wednesday, July 1, 8 p.m. ET Where: San Francisco Bay Area TV: FOX Stream: Watch three days free on FOX One United States returns to the field to take on Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32 in what should be an electric pro-USA crowd at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium during the nightcap. After earning six points from its group stage with wins over Paraguay and Australia along with a loss to Türkiye, many will view the U.S. team as favorites in this game. But historical factors tell a different story for Mauricio Pochettino’s team. Starting with the 1990 World Cup, the U.S. national team’s record against European teams in this tournament is abysmal. With the loss to Türkiye last week, the USA has now faced European teams 21 times in the World Cup. During that span, the team has won just once, in the 3-2 win over Portugal in its 2002 opener. Meanwhile, the team has drawn seven times while having lost 13 times. On the issue of knockouts, since 1990, the U.S. team has won just one World Cup knockout while having lost five. The good news for Pochettino’s team is that its entire starting lineup from the 4-1 win over Paraguay is now healthy and ready for selection. That includes Christian Pulisic, who missed the win over Australia due to a calf injury, as well as Tyler Adams, Folarin Balogun, Antonee Robinson and Chris Richards, who did not play against Türkiye to avoid the risk of a yellow card suspension for this game. Offensively, the keys for the U.S. team involve winger Christian Pulisic and his ability to dribble at opponents to open space for his teammates. Meanwhile, Folarin Balogun was very dangerous in the first two games. If teammates can get him the ball, he is a lethal finisher. The midfield trio of Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie and Malik Tillman will look to control possession and dictate the tempo. Bosnia and Herzegovina will not be an easy test for the U.S. team by any stretch. Sergej Barbarez's team boasts a nicely blended roster that includes experience and youthful energy. Both were on display in the team's 3-1 win over Qatar to clinch the team's spot in the knockouts. Salzburg left midfielder Kerim Alajbegovic, 18, was the best player on the field in that game and his highlight came in scoring the opening goal. Ermin Mahmic, 21, was also important off the bench when he scored the final goal. Then there is PSV Eindhoven winger Esmir Bajraktarević, 21, who will be getting a lot of attention in this game given that he was born and raised in Wisconsin. He began his professional career with the New England Revolution and played for years with the U.S. youth national teams before switching to Bosnia and Herzegovina (where his parents were born) in 2024. On the other side of the age equation, the team's all-time leading scorer in Edin Džeko remains key to Bosnia's offense. In the win over Qatar, Džeko was very active as his header forced Qatar’s own goal in the 34th minute. Then just before halftime, he nearly scored when his shot smashed off the post. This should be an emotional game with both teams looking to win what would be a historically important victory for their national team programs. The U.S. team wants to notch a win that would inspire a new generation of fans to fall in love with the sport and the team. Bosnia and Herzegovina is looking to win its first ever World Cup knockout game with a roster that consists of many exciting young players. Player To Watch Weston McKennieMidfielder · United States The Juventus midfielder is extremely important to the U.S. team. When he plays well, the team plays well. When he doesn’t, the team struggles. He is a unique and special player when he is in good form. He can play a variety of positions, often shifting during a single game. He can dribble, and can pass, and he can use his size to his advantage. In the early parts of this tournament, McKennie was at his best – and there should be no reason to expect anything else in this game. Kane's late brace fires England into round of 16 with win over DRC
England survived a major scare before coming from behind to defeat Congo DR 2-1 in a tense FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 clash on Wednesday, reported ANI. Brian Cipenga gave Congo DR a shock early lead, but captain Harry Kane's second-half brace turned the game around and secured England's place in the Round of 16. England began by trying to control possession, but Congo DR quickly disrupted their rhythm with a goal inside the 7th minute. After a fast break down the wing, a low cross was sent into the box, where Brian Cipenga was left unmarked at the back post and finished calmly past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. It was his first international goal, and it sparked wild celebrations among the Congo DR supporters in the stadium. As the first half continued, Congo DR's aggressive pressing and disciplined structure unsettled England. They limited England's creative play, forced mistakes, and drew several fouls. In the 19th minute, Jude Bellingham was booked for a late challenge during a Congo counter-attack. Congo DR also picked up a yellow card around the 28th minute when Noah Sadiki committed a tactical foul to stop a dangerous English break led by Djed Spence. Even though England dominated possession, they struggled to break through a well-organised Congo DR defence. Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford both found space in the box late in the half, but their efforts were blocked by strong last-ditch defending. Attempts from distance were also handled comfortably by goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi, who remained calm and assured throughout. Congo DR, playing in their first-ever World Cup knockout match, went into half-time with a surprise lead. In a dramatic second half, captain Harry Kane scored twice late on to turn the match around and give England a 2-1 win. At the hour mark, England manager Thomas Tuchel made attacking changes, bringing on Anthony Gordon and Bukayo Saka for Marcus Rashford and Noni Madueke to increase pressure on Congo DR. The substitutions helped England dominate possession and push Congo DR deeper into their half. Later, Eberechi Eze came on for Djed Spence as England committed more players forward. Congo DR also made changes to try and hold their shape and counter when possible. England finally equalised in the 75th minute when Harry Kane finished calmly from close range after sustained pressure inside the box. Congo DR responded with substitutions to steady their midfield, but England continued to press. In the 86th minute, Kane struck again to complete his brace and put England ahead 2-1. The stoppage time saw no goal being scored as England booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16, where they will face tournament co-hosts Mexico.

Liverpool transfer news - Yan Diomande alternative identified, World Cup star bidding war
It's the hope that kills you. Liverpool are set to miss out on a top transfer target again, in a development with echoes of Real Madrid 's capture of Jude Bellingham three years ago this summer. In truth, it was always going to be difficult to convince Yan Diomande that Liverpool in their current state are a better prospect than PSG to meet the precocious Ivorian's lofty ambitions, and that has proved to be the case as the 19-year-old has chosen the back-to-back Champions League winners as his next club should he leave RB Leipzig in the current window ( The Athletic ). It is unclear what Liverpool's next step is with regard to Diomande. Sky Sports have reported that the Reds were reluctant to meet Leipzig's €130m asking price, "which appears to give PSG a clear run at the winger," and GiveMeSport have claimed accordingly that Liverpool have now ended their interest as a result. TEAMtalk , however, insist the Reds' "immediate focus remains on Diomande" but point towards PSG contract rebel Bradley Barcola as the next alternative, who "will seek a move if he cannot secure a guaranteed first-team role next season" - plenty more on him to come. Frustratingly, L'Equipe (via Get French Football News ) have even claimed that the agreement - which is "very close" - will see PSG offer a lower salary to Diomande than the one Liverpool were reportedly willing to pay, while the transfer fee will also be lower due to "close ties between [Nasser] Al-Khelaifi [the PSG chairman] and Leipzig's management". This is what we're up against. PSG are an absolute juggernaut right now, on the pitch and off it, and their stranglehold over French football is threatening to spill over into the European game at large. All the same, we're sure Diomande won't have any second thoughts about his decision once he's sitting on the bench behind Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele for all of PSG's most important games next season. I promise I'm not bitter. In any case, now is definitely not the moment to look away as it's all up in the air as to where Liverpool turn next. Join us once again as we round up the latest gossip and rumours in the Reds transfer news column.... PSG, for their part, have wasted absolutely no time at all in cracking on with a deal for Diomande after getting the green light from the player's camp, and have already agreed a five-year contract with his representatives ( Sky Sports ). There seems to be plenty still to do on the club side, though. RB Leipzig managing director for sport, Marcel Schafer, has waded into the fray in an interview with Bild (via The Athletic ), claiming confidently that Diomande "will remain a Leipzig player". Schafer said: "Our clear intention is: Yan Diomande will play for RB Leipzig next year and we're not backing down from that. We know what we have in him. "Of course, if Yan continues like this, the time will come when we give him the opportunity to take the next step – but not this year." That seems hard to believe, as Liverpool evidently had sufficient encouragement to launch a formal bid for the player, and Diomande is therefore still expected to make the move to the French capital. Fabrizio Romano has reported as much, suggesting that Leipzig want more than €100m or a lower fee with a loan to keep him in Saxony for one more season. According to Romano, Liverpool will not return to the table for Diomande "unless the player changes his mind." However, the Italian transfer guru did provide a positive thread for Liverpool fans to cling onto on his YouTube channel in the form of an update on PSG winger Bradley Barcola, who has long been linked with an Anfield move. Romano refuted the claims of French sources that Barcola will stay at the Parc de Princes this summer, reiterating that "there is still a possibility" for the 23-year-old Frenchman to move on - with Barcola "remaining a name" for Liverpool. "Remember what I always told you about Liverpool and Bradley Barcola," Romano said. "If Liverpool go strong, there is still a possibility to see movement around Bradley Barcola, especially with this Yan Diomande story going in the direction of Paris Saint-Germain. "For Diomande [to] Liverpool [or] PSG, don't forget Barcola, because it could be Barcola [to] Liverpool, Diomande [to] PSG. And now, after a few weeks, we are going in that direction - but aqain, it depends if PSG give the green light to the exit of Barcola this summer or not. "But there is movement around the player since a long time." Sky Sports have echoed this, while Marca journalist Matteo Moretto teased on X that Liverpool are "planning new contacts" with Barcola, who has shown his class at club and international level but has struggled to break into the formidable forward lines of either PSG or France. While Diomande's ceiling looks potentially even higher than Barcola's, the Frenchman - who predominantly plays on the left side of the attack - still has all the tools to prove himself a world class player and would arguably offer more certainty having put up strong numbers over a number of seasons as opposed to just one, in Diomande's case. PSG's apparent victory in the race for Diomande appears to have had no impact on their pursuit of Monaco's Maghnes Akliouche, according to Romano again, with the 24-year-old also previously touted as a potential target for Liverpool this summer. Other credible alternatives ( The Athletic ) are Brighton's Yankuba Minteh, Lille's Matias Fernandez-Pardo and FC Koln's Said El Mala . A pair of contrasting reports emerged from Germany over the weekend regarding the third player in that proposed shortlist for Liverpool, FC Koln's Said El Mala. The 19-year-old German enjoyed a similarly strong breakout season to Diomande last term, scoring 13 goals and assisting four from just 20 Bundesliga starts, and has already been the subject of an accepted offer from Brentford - which the player turned down ( Sky Sports Germany ). The bid in question amounted to around €50m and could have broke the Bees' transfer record. According to German publication Express , Koln "would certainly have liked" to have the funds available for a "major shopping spree" as the Bundesliga stragglers' management looks to revitalise a side that barely survived relegation last season, but El Mala didn't see Brentford as "the right step for him". Express further claimed that as much as Koln would like to have the additional funds available, "the timing has to be right" so his transfer fee can be reinvested in the team - meaning an exit would need to be arranged within the coming weeks. Fussballdaten , on the other hand, claimed on Saturday that Koln are "firmly convinced that keeping [El Mala]within the core team structure for at least another season would yield significantly higher returns, both on and off the pitch," and are therefore under no pressure to sell except for a fee matching or exceeding the one previously agreed with Brentford. Intriguingly, given this report was published before Diomande's preference for PSG was made public, the article went on to say that Liverpool "plan to officially approach El Mala depending on the progress of their primary transfer targets." It continued: "Particularly in the event of potential difficulties or a stall in the Diomande transfer, there is strong speculation that the Merseyside club could knock on Cologne's door and provide a substantial budget for the young star, whom they consider an important Plan B." El Mala is certainly an exciting talent. Capable of playing up front or out on the left flank, he is a completely different type of winger to Diomande but has offered more of a consistent box threat in his time at Koln so far. Newcastle have also been linked with El Mala as a replacement for Anthony Gordon , which - in this writer's view - makes it practically a guarantee that Liverpool will sign him. You heard it here first! Moroccan midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi continues to be linked with a move to Liverpool - and just about every other top club in Europe, for that matter. According to Spanish publication Diario AS , offers arriving for Bouaddi are "incessant" and a "war between Europe's biggest clubs" is expected as teams scrap for the 18-year-old prodigy's signature. AS claim that PSG, Manchester City , Arsenal and Bayern are all in the mix along with the Reds for the €80m-rated talent, but that "it can't be ruled out that Lille will prolong the negotiations and wait another year to sell him to drive up his price." French outlet RMC Sport have thrown Manchester United 's name into the mix, too, but rule out a move from PSG. TEAMtalk seem to think otherwise - according to that report, PSG "believe they are well-placed in the race" for Bouaddi. Both of these can't be right! Meanwhile, if Matteo Moretto at Marca is to be believed, City are "very interested" and the furthest along in the hunt. Moretto claimed "direct contacts have already taken place with Lille" from the blue half of Manchester. Bouaddi is clearly a player of high potential, but it would be unlike Liverpool to get involved in a bidding war on this scale, if this is indeed the only way home with this potential transfer. Daily Mail reporter Tom Collomosse revealed on Friday that Nottingham Forest are "considering" Curtis Jones after agreeing the club record sale of Elliot Anderson to Man City for £116m. Jones has been linked with a move to Inter since January, and the Italian side saw a £21m bid rejected earlier in the summer. While Jones is open to a move in search of more game time, Liverpool are unwilling to consider offers below £35m, with the club seemingly prepared to keep Jones for the final year of his contract if their demands are not met. The obvious issue for Forest is that they are nowhere near as attractive a prospect as Inter. Collomosse wrote: "The one issue is whether Jones, having been a useful but never a crucial player for his boyhood team, would be keen to join what he might deem a lower-ranked club." One would imagine this is likely to be a fairly significant stumbling block in any potential deal. Jones, for all his reported desire to be "the main man", is a boyhood Red and would presumably be unlikely to give up the chance to win trophies for Liverpool in favour of joining a club that were threatened by relegation last season. Joining Inter, the Serie A champions and serial Champions League finalists, is one thing, but making the 100-mile one-way trip to Nottingham might not be quite so appealing for the double Premier League winner. Reliable journalist Ben Jacobs told The Redmen TV on Friday that Liverpool were one of the clubs to make an "initial inquiry on the player's side" for Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, who has been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal this summer. "Liverpool just did what Manchester United did months back," Jacobs said, "they spoke with the agent and that was it. So I'm not aware that they're progressing there either. "And it wouldn't surprise me if they want a younger kind of profile. Plus, let's not forget that Newcastle United don't want to sell. If you cast your eye back to the summer when they were really doing their big midfield revamp before they got the names in, Liverpool were obviously the ones bidding for Moises Caicedo along with Chelsea . "They were trying for Romeo Lavia along with Chelsea and who knows what will happen with Romeo Lavia, but I don't think Liverpool will be back there." At 28, Guimaraes would represent something of a risk. He has played a high-intensity brand of football at Newcastle since joining four years ago and while he has been influential with his rare combination of Brazilian flair and dogged aggression, he has never been the quickest player and Liverpool have seen with Fabinho and Alexis Mac Allister how quickly things can start to go wrong when a player's physicality fails them. In Iraola's system, even more physical demands will be placed on the central midfielders and there is no guarantee Guimaraes would be able to adapt to this - though his talent is unquestionable. It certainly is intriguing, though, that Liverpool sounded out a potential move with the player - but it sounds as if that's as far as it went. Liverpool have reportedly told Federico Chiesa to find a new club, according to Football Insider writer Wayne Veysey. The report claimed that Liverpool will consider offers between £10-15m, with the club's planned moves in wide areas making the Italy international redundant. Calciomercato have reported that three clubs are interested - Inter, Napoli and Juventus - but that Chiesa wants to try and prove his worth in pre-season first. Tommy Elphick and Shaun Cooper have agreed termination deals from Bournemouth and will now join Andoni Iraola's staff at Liverpool, Sky Sports report. An agreement was due to be signed over the weekend so confirmation from the club could be just around the corner. According to football agent David Lavelle, Alisson had already reached an agreement on personal terms with Juventus prior to Liverpool rejecting the Bianconeri's "brazen" €7m offer. Lavelle told Oggi Sport Notizie he suspects that Iraola will want to assess his current squad options, while the "need for a more senior player in the dressing room" may have been decisive in Liverpool's decision to retain their No. 1 keeper. Jarell Quansah has told BBC Football Daily that he could be "anywhere in the next two years" amid speculation over whether Liverpool will look to resign the defender, who was allowed to join Bayer Leverkusen subject to a buy-back clause last summer. Quansah said : "I've just got to think about how I can affect the now and be the best version of myself right now, and that's all I can do." And Crystal Palace are "monitoring" Harvey Elliott , according to Sky Sports . The boyhood Liverpool fan will be given the opportunity to impress Iraola as part of Liverpool's pre-season preparations after a disastrous loan move to Aston Villa saw him effectively miss a year of first-team football, having initially expected to join the Birmingham side permanently in a loan-to-buy agreement that failed to come to pass after appearance conditions were not met. Over to Liverpool legend, Robbie Fowler , for this one... The reaction in Fowler's replies speaks for itself. Pulisic was, at one time, a rumoured target for Liverpool, but he failed to live up to his potential over four years at Chelsea. While he has become an important player for AC Milan and remains so for the USMNT, Pulisic is now 27 years old and is unlikely to reach the levels expected of a starting forward for Liverpool. This take might be the word of God, but we hope Richard Hughes won't take it as a commandment. FOLLOW OUR LIVERPOOL FC FACEBOOK PAGE! (Photo by CHARLY TRIBALLEAU / AFP) Latest News, Sports June 27, 2026 Bellingham, Kane score as England beat Panama to reach World Cup last 32 EAST RUTHERFORD, United States (AFP) — Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane scored second-half goals as England got the job done against Panama at the World Cup on Saturday, a 2-0 victory at the MetLife Stadium taking Thomas Tuchel’s team into the last 32 as Group L winners. Real Madrid star Bellingham got on the end of a Bukayo Saka corner to break the deadlock just after the hour mark on a soggy day in New Jersey. It was largely uninspiring stuff up to that point, but the opening goal had been coming and Bellingham then crossed for Kane to head in the second midway through the second half. That was Kane’s third goal of the tournament after he netted a brace in the opening 4-2 win over Croatia, and the England captain has now moved clear of Gary Lineker as his country’s all-time leading World Cup scorer with 11. Three of those goals came when England thrashed Panama 6-1 at the 2018 tournament in Russia, but the Three Lions did not have things quite so easy this time against hard-working but limited opponents. Questions were perhaps being asked about England’s World Cup prospects an hour into this match, following the goalless draw against Ghana in Boston last Tuesday. They have not yet reached the same heights again as in their victory against Croatia, but England advance to the next round on top of the group with seven points out of a possible nine. Topping the section is important, as it means they avoid a possible clash with Spain in the last 16. Instead they will head to Atlanta for a tie next Wednesday, July 1 against a third-placed team. Win that, and they will be off to Mexico City in the last 16, possibly to play Mexico, in the Azteca Stadium where they lost to Diego Maradona’s Argentina in 1986. Tuchel will not be getting carried away thinking that far ahead, and there is surely a lot for England still to do before they are truly ready to take on and beat the tournament’s other heavyweights. That said, it is unlikely they will come up against any more sides who play with such a low defensive block as Ghana did, and as Panama did for much of this contest. The Central American nation, ranked 34th in the world, competed well but created few chances and have still never won a point at the tournament. They lost all three group games at their debut World Cup in 2018, and go out after losing all three matches this time — all without scoring, with this result following 1-0 reverses against Ghana and Croatia. Tuchel made five changes to his line-up following the Ghana encounter, notably choosing to rest Declan Rice from the midfield. Marcus Rashford and Saka got their first starts of the World Cup on the wings. Rashford forced a good save from Panama goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera inside the opening 10 minutes, and later headed over an Elliot Anderson cross before curling a free-kick just past in first-half stoppage time. Panama did also threaten once in the opening period, when Jordan Pickford had to get down to stop a Jose Luis Rodriguez shot at his near post. England were pedestrian before the break, but the match started to open up for them following the restart. Jose Cordoba nearly forced an own goal when his clearance came off teammate Andres Andrade and went narrowly over, and Mosquera then denied Kane. A goal was beginning to feel inevitable and it arrived on 62 minutes as Bellingham held off Jorge Gutierrez at Saka’s corner to turn the ball in. That was his second goal of the competition, and he then turned provider for Kane to make sure of the win. Jose Fajardo then thought he had a late consolation for Panama, but his effort was disallowed for offside. It has probably been England’s least remarkable group-stage showing at a World Cup since 2014, when they went out in the first round. This time, however, they are safely through.
