Man Utd handed Andrey Santos green light as Chelsea make transfer stance clear
Chelsea are prepared to entertain offers for Andrey Santos this summer with several Premier League clubs believed to be monitoring the midfielder's situation. Manchester United and Newcastle are among those touted to be interested. United are keen to strengthen their central midfield options, with the club having already agreed a deal to sign Ederson from Atalanta. The Red Devils have deemed deals for Mateus Fernandes and Elliot Anderson as too expensive this summer, as they joined Tottenham and Manchester City , respectively. Santos has attracted interest from a number of the Blues' top-flight rivals amid uncertainty surrounding his future at Stamford Bridge. While the 22-year-old has four years left on his deal in west London, Chelsea , though not actively forcing the midfielder towards the exit, are receptive to bids for his signature - provided they meet their valuation. Santos featured 43 times across all competitions for the Blues during the 2025/26 campaign, but only 25 of those outings came as a member of the starting lineup. With Chelsea facing no European commitments next season, Santos' playing opportunities could diminish further still, particularly with the Blues pursuing a central midfielder in the summer market. Chelsea signed Santos from Vasco da Gama for £18million in 2023 and he has spent time on loan with Nottingham Forest and Strasbourg in that time. Reports suggest the west London side value him at £50m. Get the latest World Cup news straight to your inbox by signing up to our Make Football Great Again newsletter now! Chelsea maintain a comparable position regarding Enzo Fernandez. Should a prospective buyer prove willing to meet the £120million asking price, then Fernandez would be permitted to depart. That scenario now looks increasingly improbable, however, after Real Madrid issued an official statement on Friday morning confirming they have "no intention" of pursuing a deal for the Argentine this summer. Those close to Stamford Bridge remain unconcerned by the situation. Chelsea will welcome Fernandez back into the fold should no club meet their asking price, with the midfielder set to feature in Xabi Alonso's squad next season. FOLLOW OUR CHELSEA FB PAGE! Latest Blues news and more on our dedicated Facebook page Valentin Barco is anticipated to make the move from Strasbourg, providing Alonso with another much-needed option in the centre of midfield. Chelsea are yet to officially confirm the Argentine international's signing, though sources close to the deal insist he will be heading to the Bridge within the next few weeks. Elsewhere, Chelsea appear to have failed in their bid to sign Granit Xhaka from Sunderland . Alonso had been eager to link up once more with the 33-year-old midfielder after their trophy-laden partnership at Bayer Leverkusen, but the Black Cats are standing firm, insisting he is simply not available at any price this summer. How Tottenham's £237m spending spree could pave the way for the return of Harry Kane
Tottenham might well have paid over the odds for Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali but their early summer outlay shows they mean real transfer business and are starting to look like a serious football club again

All six players on Arsenal's transfer list named and rated as £444m worth of talent scouted
Arsenal are yet to confirm any new summer signings, with the exception of Piero Hincapie's loan move being made permanent . Still, there is a growing sense that the Gunners are simply playing a waiting game while carefully assessing the market for the best available options. A central midfielder, a left winger, a right back and potentially a striker are at the top of Mikel Arteta and Andrea Berta's agenda, as Arsenal look to build upon a highly successful campaign. Unfortunately for the Premier League champions, a number of external factors — including the ongoing World Cup and Manchester City's £116million acquisition of Elliot Anderson — have driven up the asking price of several key targets. Here, Mirror Football examines some of the most prominent names being tipped for a move to the Emirates Stadium. By assessing their respective estimated transfer valuations, their fit within Arteta's system and the likelihood of Berta securing a deal, we award each player on the list — with a staggering combined value of £444m — a score out of 10. FOLLOW OUR ARSENAL FB PAGE! Latest Gunners news and more on our dedicated Facebook page Morgan Rogers is Arsenal's primary attacking target this summer. The Gunners are pushing hard to secure a deal as they seek a new forward to strengthen their left flank, with the futures of Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard remaining uncertain. According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal have made significant headway on the player's side. Nevertheless, Aston Villa's eye-watering valuation of £130m, given he has multiple years remaining on his contract, presents a challenge. Chelsea's pursuit of the 23-year-old England international may also enable Villa to demand a club-record sum from Arsenal. Yet the Gunners are reportedly optimistic about finding a resolution, which could involve potentially tabling an offer including add-ons. There is little question that Rogers would considerably improve Arsenal's attacking options and, should all parties agree on a sensible valuation, it would be a landmark signing. Bradley Barcola is another name on Arteta's wish list. However, the Paris Saint-Germain forward's astronomical price tag is further evidence of the market being inflated this summer. The Athletic reports the winger is not available for transfer and PSG value him considerably higher than the £116m City invested in Anderson. The 23-year-old's goalscoring exploits for France would also have increased his market value. While his speed and skill would benefit Arsenal greatly, Barcola at £116m would not deliver the level of improvement on Martinelli they desire. That, combined with Liverpool's firm interest in the player, indicates a deal is unlikely. However, one potential twist could be Barcola's continued hesitancy to commit to new terms, which might force PSG into reducing their asking price. Arsenal had an informal bid of £45m for Bruno Guimaraes rejected by Newcastle last week. However, that offer was merely intended to gauge the Magpies' position. Guimaraes has been on Arteta's radar since the Spaniard took the reins in 2020. Meanwhile, The Athletic FC podcast reports that Guimaraes is viewed internally at Arsenal as a stronger fit than Sandro Tonali, previously linked with the Gunners , to partner Declan Rice in the engine room. Tonali is set to complete a move to Tottenham in a deal totalling £100m, while Guimaraes is thought to be attainable for a more reasonable £65m. At that price, the 28-year-old represents both a realistic and high-quality acquisition. The primary concern surrounds his age profile and future resale value. A younger option to Guimaraes is Bournemouth's Alex Scott. Tonali and Anderson's recent transfers have driven up the asking prices of other Premier League midfielders, with the Cherries reportedly now valuing their 22-year-old starlet at £80m. Fabrizio Romano reports that Arsenal recently made contact with Bournemouth regarding the player. They were informed he would be difficult to get as the Cherries don’t need money and are offering Scott a new contract, with the possibility of including a release clause. The Athletic FC podcast claims Arsenal are genuine admirers of the midfielder and suggested other leading clubs are also interested in securing his signature. Scott would represent a costly and difficult deal, but one with plenty of upside. A less familiar name linked with Arsenal is Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis. The BBC reports that the Gunners have been offered Tzolis, who would serve as an ideal squad addition similar to Trossard, should the Belgian be offloaded. It's claimed that the potential signing of the Greece international wouldn't influence whether Arsenal chase a deal for Rogers or an alternative option later in the summer. The Greece international may be obtainable for around £35m - which would mark a record fee collected for a Belgian Pro League player. Tzolis, 24, is believed to be keen to join Arsenal's squad, providing them with an additional edge as they aim to complete his transfer. football.london reports Arsenal have contacted Kerim Alajbegovic's representatives to explore a potential move to north London this summer. Alajbegovic, who turns 19 in September, netted 13 goals for Red Bull Salzburg last season before he returned to Leverkusen via a £7m buy-back clause. The highly-rated winger penned a five-year contract with Bayer Leverkusen but his future remains unclear as clubs weigh up approaches. Arsenal should not spend heavily on the teenager, given he still lacks top level experience. Transfermarkt value him at £18m. Should they prioritise the winger, the Gunners could use their good relationship with Leverkusen to their advantage by securing him on the cheap.

Andoni Iraola will have to change two players if Liverpool ignore inflated transfer market
The World Cup maybe in full swing out in the United States, Canada and Mexico but the news cycle of the transfer window churns on without remorse. This week has brought us more news of big fees being spent with Tottenham Hotspur signing Matheus Fernandes of West Ham United and closing in on Sandro Tonali at Newcastle United, at a combined cost of £185m. Those moves follow on from the £116m deal for Elliot Anderson that Manchester City struck with Nottingham Forest in recent days. It's clear, then, that a new midfielder costs a pretty penny in the modern era, specifically for some of the more well-heeled clubs in English football. So, with that in mind, do Liverpool really need a central midfielder themselves this summer? Is there someone they absolutely have to breaking the bank for? Or do they use their funds elsewhere to improve the squad? The ECHO's Liverpool writers assess it in our latest panel debate piece. The midfielder market has become the Premier League's latest craze in recent days. Not content with making Elliot Anderson another member of the exclusive £100m-player club, English football's spendthrift nature has now seen Sandro Tonali become the eighth person to exchange hands for a nine-figure fee. Anderson - who is now a Manchester City player - and Tonali - who is closing in on a move to Tottenham Hotspur - will join Liverpool duo Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, Chelsea pair Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, Arsenal star Declan Rice and Manchester City's Jack Grealish - the first to break that barrier five years ago - as £100m players. In fairness to Tonali, his move from Newcastle to Spurs will only see him become a £100m man if his £7.5m worth of add-ons are unlocked but at that level, what's a few million quid to quibble over, right? It's increasingly obvious the Premier League's biggest clubs are comfortable spending upwards of £100m on the players they think will significantly improve the side but never has that been more apparent after Spurs - a side with successive 17th-place finishes - splashed out the considerable sum this week. It's an enormous fee for a club without Champions League revenue to prop them up. Throw in the £85m deal for Matheus Fernandes from relegated West Ham United and it's obvious that midfielders now carry a remarkable premium. With respect to Anderson, Tonali and Fernandes - all fine players in their own right - no club is signing a prime Steven Gerrard this summer. They are not even getting a Frank Lampard, for that matter. What price might a modern-day Roy Keane or Patrick Vieira fetch in this current climate? The mind boggles. But recent trends have shown that big clubs are now expected - and are willing - to pay big money for their midfielders. So at a time when the Reds have other, more pressing concerns, is targeting someone for the engine room a prudent use of their resources? Mohamed Salah still needs replacing and that's before we even get into the idea of what else might be needed in the forward areas given the uncertainty around Federico Chiesa's future. A right-back is a must and a centre-half might be desirable too. So a mega-money central midfielder right now feels like it'd take a huge chunk out of the transfer budget at the wrong time. A lot will surely centre around the future of Curtis Jones, who is wanted by Inter and Nottingham Forest with just a year left on his deal. If Andoni Iraola can instead find a way to get Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister purring again, a new midfielder might not rank as highly on the agenda. That, right now, feels like the most realistic way to upscale the midfield before the start of the season. Even before the Premier League title was secured in April last year, there was a nagging suspicion about the Liverpool team under Arne Slot. The midfield wasn't quite right. That was seen during the away leg of the Champions League round of 16 clash against Paris Saint-Germain and then the League Cup final defeat to Newcastle United at Wembley. Two issues became clear: a lack of mobility and physicality. At the time it could easily have been seen as just the effects of an arduous season catching up on an engine room that was rarely rotated. But last season demonstrated there was a bit more to it. Slot recognised the need for change, but instead ended up making the midfield less robust by not only bringing in Florian Wirtz as the number 10 to help unpick opponents, but then asking Ryan Gravenberch to play in a more progressive role from the double pivot. Alexis Mac Allister, who was dealing with his own fitness issues, couldn't cope with the added defensive workload and the Reds became far too easy to play through, not least given neither of the other chief options, Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones, would claim to be regular number six. True, Wataru Endo can. But he wasn't overly used by Slot and in any case spent a large part of last season injured. And that perhaps exposed what Liverpool need - a proper defensive midfielder to better protect the back four and allow the other midfielders to flourish. New head coach Andoni Iraola consistently used oner in his 4-2-3-1 set-up at Bournemouth, so it would be a surprise if that isn't replicated by the Spaniard. Liverpool, though, have a lot of midfielders in their squad right now and can't really afford another one. Perhaps only if one or more of the current members are moved on - and Jones continues to look the most likely - will the Reds consider making a move. The last 15 months suggest a defensive midfielder is needed. To briefly look to England for inspiration, you saw in their laboured win over Congo just how important it is to have good options in wide attacking areas. Thomas Tuchel started with Noni Madueke and Marcus Rashford in Atlanta, and then when those two tired he brought on Bukayo Saka and Anthony Gordon, the latter of whom made a big impact and helped change the game. Liverpool, of course, had very little in those areas in the season just gone, and with the departure of Mohamed Salah they've now got even less. But such players don't come cheap. All of which is to say that it is the wings where the Reds need to spend big this summer, and that means that the incredibly inflated midfield market is not somewhere they can afford to shop. Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Adam Wharton, Alex Scott. They're all good players, but with the possible exception of Tonali are they ever going to thrill you and get you off your seat? The market for them is madness. Liverpool have good midfielders at the club already, and hopefully Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones can all step up a level from last season. Trey Nyoni has a big immediate future too. Hopefully he sticks around. One more could come in, especially if Wataru Endo leaves, but how about unearthing a rough diamond instead of paying an exorbitant fee? There are tons of footballers out there, and Liverpool have scouts all around the world. Time to earn your crust. FOLLOW OUR LIVERPOOL FC FACEBOOK PAGE! Man City confirm £116m Elliot Anderson transfer in club-record move for England star
Manchester City have announced they have reached an agreement with Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson. City struck a deal with the City Ground club last month and the midfielder received permission from the FA to undergo a medical in New York last week. The England star will become a club-record arrival for City, who are paying a straight fee of £116million to land the 23-year-old. Anderson will sign a five-year contract at the Etihad and will add depth and quality in midfield following the departure of Bernardo Silva. " Manchester City and Nottingham Forest have reached an agreement for the transfer of Elliot Anderson," City confirmed in a statement. "Anderson, 23, is currently competing at the FIFA World Cup with England and has completed a medical in Kansas. The formalities of the move will be finalised upon his return to England. "In the meantime, everyone at Manchester City wishes Elliot and the England squad the very best of luck in their World Cup campaign and we look forward to welcoming him to Manchester in due course. " JOIN US ON FACEBOOK! Latest news, analysis and much more on Mirror Football's Facebook page Anderson enjoyed a stellar year for Forest last season, which resulted in him becoming one of the hottest properties in world football. He attracted interest from various clubs, including Manchester United . And although United were keen to sign the England international, Old Trafford chiefs did not want to pay the fee that Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis was demanding. And the fee City will fork out eclipses the £100m they paid Aston Villa for Jack Grealish in 2021. Due to his current World Cup commitments, Anderson is unlikely to travel on City’s summer tour to Asia. That means his debut could come in the Community Shield against Arsenal at the Principality Stadium in Cardiffon on Sunday, August 16. The England star is Enzo Maresca's second summer arrival after a deal for rising star Mathys Detourbet from sister club Troyes. Anderson is currently in the US preparing for his side’s last-16 World Cup encounter against Mexico on Monday after they came from behind to beat DR Congo on Wednesday night. Anderson started in midfield for the Three Lions as Harry Kane saved his side from one of their most embarrassing results in history, as two goals in the final 15 minutes earned a 2-1 win in the last-32 in Atlanta. Asked last week if transfer speculation was getting to him, Anderson said: "It's pretty easy really, I'm just focusing on the present, I'm blocking it all out. "I've got a plan and it's to perform for England. I'm putting myself in the best position to cross the line and do that." A member of the England team that won the 2025 Under-21 European Championship, Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel described the midfielder as the 'full package' ahead of the World Cup getting underway. He said: “He’s a top player. There’s nothing more to say, he’s the full package. I’m happy that he’s with us on that kind of level and he’s a key player for us.” Anderson joined Forest for £35m from Newcastle United in 2024 and made 92 appearances for the club, scoring six goals and claiming 11 assists. He helped Forest finish seventh in the Premier League in 2024/25 and then 16th last season, when they also reached the Europa League semi-finals. Shearer at £237m? Where Anderson transfer stands in adjusted rankings
Elliot Anderson becomes the third-most expensive signing in Premier League history after Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz with his £116m transfer from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City. But according to new rankings in which historic fees are adjusted to the purchasing power of clubs today, the midfielder is in fact only the 31st-most expensive addition of the Premier League era. Most comparisons of this type adjust historic prices according to inflation, but the changing price of a pint of milk in the supermarket doesn't reflect the 3,500 per cent increase in Premier League revenues which has transformed the spending capacity of clubs in the transfer market over the last three decades. In order to more accurately show what past transfers would be worth today factoring those revenue increases, football finance expert Kieran Maguire and professor Jason Laws have created a new index which throws up some fascinating results. Transfer Centre LIVE! | Man City news & transfersGot Sky? Watch Man City games LIVE on your phone📱No Sky? Get Sky Sports or stream with no contract on NOW📺Choose the Sky Sports push notifications you want! 🔔 So, if Anderson drops 28 places in the Laws-Maguire Index, which players occupy the top spots? Isak, the player with the highest transfer fee in Premier League history at £125m, only ranks 14th in the adjusted list, with record scorer Alan Shearer topping the pile. The £15m fee paid by Newcastle to sign him from Blackburn Rovers sounds modest by today's standards but it was paid in 1996, when football revenues were a fraction of today's. According to the Laws-Maguire Index, it adjusts to an eye-watering £237m. Two Manchester United signings from the early noughties sit second and third. They paid £33m for Rio Ferdinand and £28m for Juan Sebastian Veron in 2003 and 2001, figures which adjust to £179m and £199m respectively today. Stan Collymore's £9m move from Nottingham Forest to Liverpool in 1995, which adjusts to £179m today, puts him fourth, while Fernando Torres is fifth. His £50m transfer from Liverpool to Chelsea would be worth £177m today, according to the Index. Dennis Bergkamp, Andy Cole, Andriy Shevchenko, Dwight Yorke and Paul Pogba are next on the list, meaning half of the players in the top 10 are Manchester United signings. Ferdinand features twice in the top 15, with his £18m transfer from West Ham to Leeds in 2001, two years before his move to Old Trafford, calculated to be worth £140m today. Along with Isak, the only other current Premier League players in the top 20 are Jack Grealish, Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez. So, while transfer fees keep increasing, the Laws-Maguire Index suggests spending relative to resources was actually more extravagant in the Premier League's earlier years.

Manchester United midfield transfer state of play as latest blow forces rethink
Manchester United must turn their sights elsewhere in the search for new midfielders, after refusing to match Tottenham's £85million for West Ham youngster Mateus Fernandes. Spurs will wrap up a deal with the 21-year-old after agreeing to meet the Hammers' asking price, something United were unwilling to do. It means they have now missed out on their top two targets this summer, having seen Manchester City agree a £116million deal with Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson. United have agreed a package to sign Ederson from Atalanta for £35million, but still need to add an elite-level midfielder to their ranks after seeing Casemiro leave at the end of last season. This is where they could turn next and who remains on the shortlist after seeing Anderson and Fernandes get away. Alex Scott United have had the 22-year-old Bournemouth midfielder on their list for most of this season but his name has risen up the ranks as other targets have fallen by the wayside. Scott has Premier League experience and has enjoyed an outstanding campaign with the Cherries, earning a spot in England's pre-World Cup training camp. His form has reportedly also attracted Arsenal's attention. Bournemouth are keen to tie the former Bristol City man down to a new deal this summer and could include a release clause in it, as they did with Antoine Semenyo a year ago. Semenyo then joined Manchester City midway through the season, but United's need for midfield reinforcements is so pressing they might not be able to wait. Aurélien Tchouaméni The France international is the biggest name on the list and is someone United have been keeping an eye on for several months, having been alerted to the fact an exit from Real Madrid this summer isn't impossible. Real bosses continue to insist he is going nowhere, despite a fight with captain Federico Valverde towards the end of last season. Jose Mourinho also wants to keep the 26-year-old. United will be in the market if Tchouameni does become available, however. That seems unlikely right now, but if Real land a big-money midfielder this summer the situation could change. Carlos Baleba Baleba is arguably the third midfielder United have stepped away from due to a high asking price in the last 12 months. They were interested in signing him 12 months ago, but were put off by Brighton's demands of £100million. They remain interested in Baleba but there has been little sign of movement so far this summer. Despite the 22-year-old enduring a difficult campaign in Sussex, Brighton haven't significantly dropped the price they want for a sale. Adam Wharton The trail has gone even colder on Wharton. The England international has had plenty of admirers, but at Old Trafford , there is a view that he is too similar to Kobbie Mainoo to play next to him in a two-man midfield. Felix Nmecha Nmecha has a fan inside the building at Carrington in director of football Jason Wilcox, who was heavily involved in City's academy when Nmecha spent 14 years at the club as a youngster. The Borussia Dortmund man is a player several Premier League clubs have looked at, with United reportedly one of them, but his World Cup ended in a half-time withdrawal as Germany lost to Paraguay on penalties and his influence waned during the tournament. Others United held an interest in Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali earlier this summer, but have so far shown no interest in competing with Tottenham for his signature. At the lower end of the cost scale, they have also looked at Fulham's Sander Berge and USA midfielder Tyler Adams, who plays alongside Scott for Bournemouth.

Man Utd blown out of the water as Tottenham agree Mateus Fernandes transfer deal
Tottenham have blown Manchester United out of the water by agreeing an £85million deal for Mateus Fernandes. Spurs offered the highest bid for Fernandes, 21, who's poised to make the move across London. The Portuguese was among United's top targets for the summer transfer window , as Michael Carrick looks to rebuild his midfield. But Mirror Football understands that £85m is well above their valuation, paving the way for Tottenham to win the race. Fernandes became United's priority after they pulled out of a move for Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson. In similar circumstances, the Red Devils weren't willing to match the £116m bid which Manchester City have been successful with. It leaves United scouring the market for an alternative, with midfield stalwart Casemiro leaving upon the expiry of his contract on Wednesday. Carrick's side have, though, agreed a £35m deal with Atalanta to sign holding midfielder Ederson. Get the latest World Cup 2026 news in your inbox with our Make Football Great Again newsletter As for Tottenham, Fernandes is expected to become their fifth summer signing. Spurs have already wrapped up deals for Andy Robertson , Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka - each one a free transfer - while they paid Brighton £52m for Jan Paul van Hecke. Like United, Tottenham are now focussing on midfield. With Yves Bissouma due to leave when his contract expires and Joao Palhinha's loan having come to an end, there's now the possibility of another departure after Lucas Bergvall informed club chiefs that he wants a new challenge. Roberto De Zerbi's men narrowly avoided relegation at West Ham 's expense and have capitalised on the Irons needing to bring in funds. Jarrod Bowen is another West Ham star who several Premier League clubs are interested in. Is Mateus Fernandes worth £85million? Have your say in the comments section . The sale of Fernandes represents a huge profit for the Irons, who bought him from Southampton for £38m a year ago. Although he was unable to help West Ham avoid dropping to the Championship , the 21-year-old impressed with his consistent performances. Fernandes scored four goals and registered four assists in 38 appearances across all competitions. He also made his debut for Portugal in April, although he missed out on Roberto Martinez's 26-man squad for the World Cup. Man Utd have clear transfer priority after Manuel Ugarte injury and £116m Elliot Anderson snub
Teddy Sheringham has called on Manchester United to intensify their interest in Adam Wharton, following their failure to land Elliot Anderson. Manchester City have struck a deal with Nottingham Forest for the midfielder worth in the region of £116million . With his arrival now seemingly a formality, United have one fewer midfield target to chase as they seek a long-term replacement for the departing Casemiro . The Red Devils have been connected with a host of players since the Brazilian's exit was confirmed earlier this year, and separating genuine transfer interest from mere speculation has proven no easy task for supporters. However, according to Sheringham , who turned out for United between 1997 and 2001, Crystal Palace's Wharton should be the club's primary target. Speaking to BOYLE Sports, he said: "Adam Wharton missing out on the World Cup makes it a good time for Manchester United to get that deal done. "I think Elliot Anderson is the better player but I do like the both of them. They're both very comfortable on the ball. "There's been a lot of talk about Elliot Anderson going to Manchester United but Anderson or Wharton would be a very good acquisition for me. [Michael] Carrick knows when you're Manchester United and you're playing at home at Old Trafford you need to camp in the other team's half. "You need to box them in. You can't rely on hitting teams on the break when you're at Old Trafford but he will know that. "He's experienced that as a player and he will know what type of players it will take to do that again. It's not just about telling a person that this is what's expected when you haven't got the players to do it. Get the latest World Cup news straight to your inbox by signing up to our Make Football Great Again newsletter now! "You can't do it without the right players. That's why he needs to go and sign someone like Elliot Anderson or Adam Wharton who can win the ball high up the pitch, keep the play going in the final third, finding that pass to recycle it and keep the ball, and stop opponents getting out. "That's tough to do. Hopefully he can go out and get the right players that can do that." The comments come as United have been dealt a devastating blow, with Manuel Ugarte suffering a knee ligament injury at the World Cup which could rule him out for months. The Uruguayan was carried off on a stretcher after twisting awkwardly during his country's encounter with Spain on Saturday, with United confirming the grim news shortly afterwards. An official statement from the club read: "Manchester United can confirm that Manuel Ugarte has suffered a knee ligament injury whilst representing Uruguay in Friday's World Cup group-stage match against Spain. "Assessment of the injury is ongoing to determine the best course of treatment and the rehabilitation timescale. Everyone wishes Manuel a successful recovery and we will be supporting him every step of the way." Ugarte had been considered expendable at Old Trafford this summer, having struggled to leave his mark since his 2024 switch from Paris Saint-Germain . Yet any hopes of offloading him now appear to have been dashed by what the player himself has described as "the most serious injury a footballer can face." He took to Instagram to write: "A few days have passed since everything happened. Suffering the most serious injury a footballer can face in one of the most important matches in my country's history, and seeing it end this way without being able to stay on the pitch and support my teammates until the final whistle, is something that will stay with me for the rest of my life. "Hitting rock bottom will make me stronger in every sense, and I truly believe that's the case here. Without a doubt, when life wants you to stop, it finds a way to let you know. "It's up to me to take the positives from this. Success in life is about starting again every time you fall. I'm incredibly grateful to @aufoficial and @manutd for being there for me from the moment it happened. "A huge thank you as well to my family, my friends, and everyone who has sent me messages of support during this time. I'll be back stronger."
