England boss Thomas Tuchel sets record straight on Elliot Anderson to Man City transfer
England boss Thomas Tuchel has paid tribute to Elliot Anderson - while predicting that his big-money transfer to Manchester City will be formalised before the World Cup Round of 32 clash with DR Congo . City and Nottingham Forest have already formally agreed a transfer but it's understood the 23-year-old still needs to undergo his medical tests. While he was largely expected to undergo a medical in New York this weekend, sources close to the England camp insist those checks have not taken place yet. They are now set to take place in Kansas City, where England's training base is situated. Tuchel said when asked if he wants the deal sorted before the Three Lions head to Atlanta: "I think there's a very high chance the 'thing' is sorted before the Round of 32. "It's very impressive, I have to say, the way he plays and the way he trains, he carries himself. "He's still quite young and quite new to our national team and he just plays like he owns the place. "He's always there, I think he grew into the tournament after a bit of a difficult start against Croatia but he gets better and better. "It's good to have him, he gave green light, medical gave green light and he's without any injury concern about the moment." Anderson impressed on Saturday as England ran out 2-0 winners over Panama in New Jersey to top Group L. He is now set to become City's club-record signing and the second-most expensive player in British history after Liverpool's £125m capture of Alexander Isak. Meanwhile, Tuchel is confident his players have what it take to go deep in the tournament on the back of impressive seasons at club level. He added: “These players are used to these moments, they play Champions League and Europa League to the end. "They know what it takes. We will step up. The bigger the games get, the bigger we will get. “There is no problem growing into a tournament like this. We have strong belief and trust in each other. It is important we keep believing in what we can influence and what we can improve. The most important thing is not to be afraid and be brave.” Get the latest World Cup news straight to your inbox by signing up to our Make Football Great Again newsletter now! Man Utd news: 'Next Caicedo' arrives as 'contact made' for £75m World Cup star
Manchester United face a crucial transfer window as boss Michael Carrick looks to build upon his promising start in the Old Trafford hotseat. The Red Devils will be eager to surpass last season's third-place finish and make an impact in the Champions League . Brazilian midfielder Ederson is poised to complete a move to United from Atalanta and further signings - plus a few departures - are on the cards. With Casemiro leaving on the expiry of his contract, further midfield signings are required and United are reportedly locked in a battle with Tottenham for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes. The Portugal international is among a number of players linked with a switch to Old Trafford, along with Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali, although Elliot Anderson - another player United were interested in - has agreed to join Manchester City . On the departures front, goalkeeper Andre Onana looks set to extend his loan at Trabzonspor, with the Turkish side covering his wages and paying a loan fee. Mirror Football takes a closer look some of the latest United news lines… FOLLOW OUR MAN UTD FB PAGE! Latest United news and more on our dedicated Facebook page Exciting midfielder Cristian Orozco is set to start life at United as he closes in on his 18th birthday. United agreed to sign Fortaleza CEIF starlet last September but have to wait until July 13, when he turns 18, to register him. United are getting ahead of the game by flying him to Manchester this weekend with chief scout Giuseppe Antonaccio to begin the aclimitisation process and conduct his medical. Given his tender age, the Colombian, whose style of play has been likened to Chelsea's Moises Caicedo, is regarded as one for the future and will initially slot into United's under-21 setup. However, some first-team action next season isn't out of the question. With United involved in the Champions League, Carrick may rotate his side heavily in the Carabao Cup. United have made contact with World Cup star Felix Nmecha, according to reports in Germany . Numerous clubs are said to be interested in Borussia Dortmund's Nmecha, who has earned rave reviews for his performances in North America so far this summer. Sky Germany claim United are looking to beat the 'increasing competition' for the 25-year-old and haven't been put off by his long-term Dortmund contract, which has four years left to run and has a £75.5million buyout clause. Newcastle are also said to be interested in but reportedly want to lower the asking price, potentially leaving the door open for Man United to sweep in. A move to the Premier League is attractive to Nmecha, who is the younger brother of Leeds United forward Lukas. For now, Felix's focus will be on the World Cup, where Germany face Paraguay in the last 32 after topping Group E. England star Elliot Anderson makes statement as Man City schedule transfer medical
Elliot Anderson's £116million price-tag may seem excessive, but look closely and you'll see exactly why Manchester City view him as the future of their midfield. At this World Cup, he already looks a focal part of England's and his fingerprints were all over this cagey yet crucial Jude Bellingham-inspired victory over Panama . There's a certain school of thinking that players of such enormous economic value should guarantee you 20 goals and 15 assists per season. However, orchestrators and conductors like Anderson should not solely be judged on data and metrics, though come full-time, it was very telling that he'd had more touches than any player on the pitch (92). The 23-year-old's simplicity and comfort holding down the centre of the pitch frees up England's forward players and provided man of the match Bellingham with a licence to roam from a deeper role. The Three Lions' worrying struggles breaking down both Ghana and Panama should not be used as a stick to beat Anderson with, however. It's not really his job to pick locks and create but he is still capable of providing a killer pass - just like he did for Bellingham in Dallas. His first-half back-post cross for Marcus Rashford wasn't bad, either. One of several key issues Thomas Tuchel is facing - right now there are obviously more pressing concerns regarding fluidity, particularly in the final third - is the balance of his midfield. Morgan Rogers can be a spark but including him as the No.10 requires Tuchel to drop one of Anderson, Bellingham or Rice, which feels far-fetched. Furthermore, Anderson and Rice are very similar players - outstanding ones, too - and there's an argument that while they can excel together, the pairing lacks variety. Rice, who took a blow to his calf in Boston and had a yellow card, was rightfully rested here and it speaks volumes that even with muscle tightness, Tuchel still selected Anderson ahead of Kobbie Mainoo . Quite simply, it's because he considers him to be the heartbeat of his team and his handful of recoveries to extinguish threatening Panama breaks was further evidence of that. While it was an unsightly team display that will not live long in the memory outside of those five explosive second-half minutes, Anderson was one of very few positives and the pressure of his impending big-money transfer to City does not appear to be weighing heavily upon his shoulders. Toughest tests lie ahead but whatever happens, two years after being offered to Wolves by Newcastle in a player-plus-cash deal for Max Kilman, he is indispensable for his country on the biggest stage of all. Per sources close to the England camp, his City medical could finally take place in the coming days. Jurgen Klopp could face delay for dream job after Liverpool legend backtracks
Germany football chief Rudi Voller has reinforced his backing of Julian Nagelsmann following Germany's loss against Ecuador. Nagelsmann's position had faced scrutiny after J urgen Klopp made light of the national coach's prospects , having been touted for the role himself. However, the former Liverpool manager - who backtracked on his initial comments - may have overstepped the mark if he harboured ambitions for the Germany post. While Nagelsmann did not seek an apology from Red Bulls's global head of football, Germany's football leadership has made their stance on their man abundantly clear. Despite the Ecuador setback, the national team's sporting director, Voller, was keen to champion Nagelsmann's credentials. The 66-year-old, who netted 47 goals in 90 caps, clearly shares a robust relationship with the head coach, even being characterised as a footballing father figure. FOLLOW OUR LIVERPOOL FC FACEBOOK PAGE! All the latest news and analysis from Anfield on the Liverpool Echo's dedicated LFC Facebook page "I'm not sitting here because I have to protect Julian," he said in a press conference. "This isn't just something I say because I have to in my official capacity - but Julian is an absolutely top-class coach. "He knows that being the national coach means that many people will have different opinions on decisions. But he's experienced enough to handle that." There has been some disappointment following Germany's defeat to Ecuador, but Die Mannschaft had already secured their place in the knockout stages after wins over Ivory Coast and Curacao. Given the previous two World Cups where the team failed to progress from the group stage, Voller believes it is preferable to focus on the positives. Get the latest World Cup news straight to your inbox by signing up to our Make Football Great Again newsletter now! "Two or three weeks ago, we all would have been perfectly happy to be top of the group after just two matchdays," he said. "Of course, we wanted to maintain our momentum against Ecuador, but it's only human to be a few percentage points short against an opponent for whom it's the game of games. Everyone knows that. "I am completely calm and relaxed; the team will give it their all on Monday (against Paraguay). The basic circumstances were different. For Ecuador, that was the game of the games of the last 20 or 30 years. Things weren't much better for us back then, even when we had progressed further." Voller's defence follows his earlier public support for Nagelsmann. Earlier this month he announced that Nagelsmann would remain in post until after the Euros in 2028. "The DFB is completely satisfied with how Julian is doing," he said. "What happens after Euro 2028, I can't yet say in his case. But definitely until 2028. "Julian is a top coach. He is extremely empathetic. I know how he deals with the players. You couldn't wish for anything better." While that may well have been the DFB's stance, Klopp's quip appears to have prompted them to dig their heels in further.

Newcastle to rival Man Utd for £73m World Cup star as midfield replacement
Newcastle have shortlisted Manchester United target Felix Nmecha ahead of a potential midfield rebuild. The Magpies face losing both Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali this summer to Premier League rivals. Tottenham have reportedly agreed personal terms with Tonali while Arsenal have seen a bid for Guimaraes rejected . Newcastle are therefore making contingency plans and could steal a march on United. Nmecha, 25, is one of the midfielders under consideration at St James' Park, the Mail report. It's added that the German has been on Eddie Howe's radar for several years. Currently at the World Cup with Germany , Nmecha has started all three of their group stage matches, returning one goal and one assist. He has a £73.5million release clause in his contract with Borussia Dortmund , who signed him from fellow Bundesliga club Wolfsburg in 2023. Get the latest World Cup 2026 news in your inbox with our Make Football Great Again newsletter Prior to that, Nmecha spent 14 years on the books of Manchester City , making three first-team appearances under Pep Guardiola . His elder brother, Lukas, was also at City as a youngster and now plays for Leeds . Nmecha is under contract at Dortmund until 2030, having signed a new long-term deal back in March before he helped Niko Kovac's side finish second and secure Champions League football. But that hasn't prevented speculation over his future, especially after Germany topped their World Cup group and booked a round-of-32 clash with Paraguay . A box-to-box midfielder, he enjoys getting forward and firing off shots, scoring six goals while registering three assists last season. But his 6ft 3in frame allows him to win aerial duels and break up play. Should Felix Nmecha join Newcastle or Manchester United? Have your say in the comments section . Having moved to Manchester as a child, he'd likely have no problem settling back into English life. Raised by a Nigerian father and a German mother, he's embraced each of the cultures that he's experienced. "With Nigeria a lot of the culture is food, happiness, even just the business mindset, being disciplined," Nmecha told SW magazine. "Then the German side is also very disciplined and has good values and morals. "And then the England side, I think a lot of English people are very open when it comes to conversations, having a laugh and hard working as well." Premier League release statement after Aston Villa hit with £570,000 fine
Aston Villa have been slapped with a whopping £570,000 fine by the Premier League after repeatedly causing kick-off delays throughout last season. Villa accepted culpability for holding up either first or second-half starts on nine separate occasions during the campaign. Their disciplinary woes began back in August following a 1-0 defeat to Brentford, which landed them an initial £5,000 penalty. However, each subsequent breach saw the sanctions escalate dramatically. The most recent punishment came after March's 4-1 home hammering by Chelsea , resulting in a £150,000 hit to the club's coffers. That Chelsea incident followed another costly delay during February's 1-1 home stalemate with Leeds United, where both halves started late - with the second period kicking off almost two minutes behind schedule - earning Villa another £150,000 fine. For the Chelsea breach specifically, Villa copped £130,000, with an additional £20,000 added on due to what the Premier League disciplinary panel described as "the aggravating nature of the club's repeat offending". A Premier League statement confirmed: "The Premier League and Aston Villa FC have entered into a sanction agreement after the club accepted it had breached Premier League Rule L.33 in relation to kick-off and re-start obligations. "The breaches occurred in nine Premier League matches during the 2025/26 season. Rules relating to kick-offs and restarts help ensure the organisation of the competition is set at the highest possible professional standard and provide certainty to fans and participating clubs. "It also ensures the broadcast of every Premier League match is kept to schedule. As required by the Premier League Rules, the sanction agreement has been ratified by three members of the Independent Judicial Panel." Michael Carrick's stance on stunning Man Utd swap transfer for Trent Alexander-Arnold
Manchester United's chances of completing a potential move for Trent Alexander-Arnold could rest on one player moving in the opposite direction. And while Jose Mourinho might favour the move, Michael Carrick may not be as keen as he looks to maintain his current momentum. Ex-Liverpool star Alexander-Arnold, 27, struggled to shine in his first season at the Bernabeu and was picked apart in the Spanish media as a result . Injury curtailed his progress in the first half of the campaign before he developed some consistency in the starting XI, ending his debut campaign with five assists in 30 outings. There's an added sense of mystery to the situation now Mourinho has returned to Madrid . 'The Special One' has never worked with Alexander-Arnold and has already hinted change is coming amid reports Denzel Dumfries is on the verge of joining from Inter Milan . At the same time, Diogo Dalot has been mooted as another Mourinho signing and could move as part of a swap deal. Multiple Old Trafford icons have spoken positively about Alexander-Arnold making the jump to United, which has only encouraged talk of a Premier League return. FOLLOW OUR MAN UTD FB PAGE! Latest United news and more on our dedicated Facebook page Speaking to Hajper, Antonio Valencia was the latest to talk up the prospect of Alexander-Arnold crossing the forbidden divide: "Trent is a player I like a lot. He has a very good right foot, he crosses well, and he is a player who defends well. "He would be very good for Manchester United. He knows the Premier League. He knows what it means to win the Champions League and the Premier League. He is a passionate player, and I would like to see him at Manchester United." A potential swap deal for Dalot seemingly doesn't have much legs following reports Carrick wants to keep the Portugal international. Mourinho signed his countryman when he was at Old Trafford and has been linked with a reunion at Real. Dalot, 27, hasn't necessarily become the right-back enforcer many United fans wanted but holds value given he can cover both full-back positions. The defender joined from Porto in 2018 and could bring up a decade at United if he sees out his contract until 2028, with the option of an additional year. Upon bringing his compatriot to England, Mourinho was gushing in his praise of Dalot and said at the time: "In his age group, he is the best full-back in Europe. Get the latest World Cup news straight to your inbox by signing up to our Make Football Great Again newsletter now! Valencia's former team-mate, Wes Brown, has also advocated for United to make a move on Alexander-Arnold and recently told Compare.bet: "Manchester United would be a very good move for Trent Alexander-Arnold. What a player. He would really help how Michael Carrick wants to attack teams. "I think it is clear he is not really enjoying himself at Real Madrid. He would be a great player to have, and I think anyone in the Premier League would want to sign him. Who wouldn't have Trent in their team?" Carrick deployed Amad Diallo as a wing-back for portions of last season, with Noussair Mazraoui also in that rotation when fit. However, there is a sense United could do with a standout upgrade in the position. Alexander-Arnold could well be that, just as Dalot may be a useful bargaining chip for any potential deal. However, the logistics of pulling off such a controversial switch this summer appear too great for United to overcome. Kylian Mbappe's plea to Michael Oliver after World Cup referee threat made
Kylian Mbappe instructed Michael Oliver to pass the France captain's armband to Aurelien Tchouameni after being substituted during their 4-1 win over Norway . This incident comes barely a week after the Real Madrid forward had a heated exchange with referee Alireza Faghani during their opening group-stage game against Senegal . Mbappe, 27, was not quite as animated with the Premier League official. After removing the armband, he fiddled with it in his right hand while walking over to Oliver, arm outstretched. During the handover, they managed to stretch it as Mbappe held on while issuing orders. He then pointed towards Tchouameni. Oliver swiftly obliged as the forward continued his walk off the pitch to be replaced by Jean-Philippe Mateta. France led 3-1 at the time, with Desire Doue finishing Norway off in the fourth minute of added time by heading home a Bradley Barcola cross. Mbappe did not get himself on the scoresheet, but assisted the first two goals of Ousmane Dembele's 25-minute hat-trick. Tchouameni set up the third, which restored their two-goal advantage after Thelo Aasgaard briefly halved the deficit. Madrid's main man had all but the final three minutes of the 90 to make it a hat-trick of assists. However, it was not to be. Despite the game effectively being over as a contest by that stage, it appears Mbappe was still well aware of the new substitution time limits. That is why he was so insistent on the referee handing over his armband, rather than doing it himself, as he would have done last season. Players at the World Cup have just ten seconds to leave the pitch after their number is held aloft. The measure to curb time-wasting penalises the oncoming player by having their team play with 10 men for at least a minute if the swap does not take place within the time frame. The only exceptions to leaving the pitch at the nearest point are injury or security concerns, neither of which applied in this instance. Get the latest World Cup news straight to your inbox by signing up to our Make Football Great Again newsletter now! Mbappe, though, was not such a stickler for the rules in France's opening game. After having a penalty chalked off when they played Senegal, the captain protested after feeling Sadio Mane fouled him. Even after consulting the pitchside monitor, Faghani stood by his decision, insisting that Mbappe initiated contact with the former Liverpool player. Dembele and Michael Olise also remonstrated with the referee. Nicola Hickling, Expert Analyst and Professional LipReader at LipReader Ltd, confirmed Faghani said: "That Diouf, just a contact and Sadio, a contact." Mbappe then responded: "Hey, I'ma go and watch it."

Liverpool latest: Yan Diomande transfer decision timeline as Alisson contract claim made
Another day in the summer transfer window has brought fresh developments for Liverpool. The ongoing World Cup has already showcased a host of players the Reds have been linked with. Andoni Iraola's transfer activity got underway earlier this month with the signing of Spain international Victor Munoz from Osasuna. Liverpool are also reported to be firmly in the hunt for RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande , having made their interest known to the Bundesliga club. A further prominent rumour this summer has centred on Alisson Becker's reported exit to a European heavyweight. Today's updates shed new light on both transfers. Diomande has made clear that speculation surrounding his future can wait as Ivory Coast gear up for their first-ever appearance in the knockout rounds of a World Cup. Liverpool declared their readiness to pay as much as £86m for the RB Leipzig star last week. However, the Bundesliga outfit are unwilling to part with the 19-year-old winger and are keen to open negotiations with the player's representatives over a fresh contract in Germany. FOLLOW OUR LIVERPOOL FC FACEBOOK PAGE! All the latest news and analysis from Anfield on the Liverpool Echo's dedicated LFC Facebook page Diomande's agency, Roc Nation Sports, are understood to have been canvassing some of Europe's biggest clubs for several months regarding the player's next destination. European champions Paris Saint-Germain are also in the frame, though Liverpool's pursuit is believed to be the most progressed at this stage. Diomande assisted Nicolas Pepe on Thursday evening as the Elephants defeated Curacao 2-0 to advance to the last 32 of the World Cup. However, he was unwilling to discuss club football in the aftermath. He said: "Right now, I don't know. I am not thinking about my future after the World Cup. I am trying to put all my energy into the World Cup and we will see what is going to happen after that. I can say nothing about." Football agent David Lavelle has highlighted Andoni Iraola's influence in retaining Alisson at Anfield this summer. Serie A heavyweights Juventus have been searching for a new goalkeeper and attempted to lure Liverpool's first choice between the sticks. It's been suggested the Brazilian had agreed a contract, with negotiations over a transfer fee between the two clubs proving the stumbling block. Lavelle spoke to Oggi Sport Notizie and shed light on what had complicated the move. "It must be remembered that Liverpool have changed their manager," he said. "Iraola probably wants to take a look at everyone. Alisson only has one year left on his contract. "I know he's reached a personal agreement with Juventus. The Brazilian is worth around €15million (£13m) or so and the Bianconeri entered the race for this goalkeeper with a brazen offer. I don't know if the Juventus management offered €7m (£6m) to Liverpool just because he's in the final year of his contract." He added that Liverpool would be keen to retain the star, who is currently representing Brazil at the World Cup. Lavelle continued: "Players of the calibre of [Mohamed] Salah and [Virgil] van Dijk are about to leave, and you need an older player in the dressing room. I think the Reds want to keep him for that reason."
