Expected Goals (xG) Explained
Learn how expected goals (xG) measure chance quality in football and how to use xG stats on Ninety Minutes Plus.
What is xG?
Expected goals (xG) assigns a probability to every shot based on factors like distance, angle, body part, and defensive pressure. A 0.40 xG chance means the shot would be scored about 40% of the time across a large sample.
Why xG matters
xG helps separate finishing luck from chance creation. A team can win while underperforming xG, or lose while creating better chances than the opponent.
Where to find xG on NMP
Open any matchday page and select the Statistics tab for team and player-level match metrics, or browse league leaderboards for season-long xG rankings.
